Jim Metzler and Steve Taylor introduced the concept of Application Delivery 2.0, a major component of which is cloud computing. As noted in one of Jim’s recent reports on cloud computing, the goal of cloud computing is a significant improvement in the cost effective, elastic provisioning of IT services.
Welcome to Virtual WAN Speeds and Feeds
Where does WAN optimization and application acceleration come together with virtualization and cloud computing? Right here.

Bojan Simic has written an interesting piece on how only a few of these vendors are actually offering management products that are based on virtualization technology or using SaaS as a delivery method. Bojan legitimately asks the question: If organizations can achieve significant business benefits from virtualization and the Cloud when managing their computing resources, can they achieve similar benefits from using these technologies for managing the performance of IT and business services?

We stumbled upon an interesting article that was written earlier this year entitled the Hidden Cost of the Cloud which outlines the uplift in network bandwidth charges that could be incurred if you used a cloud platform, such as Microsoft’s Windows Azure, Amazon or Rackspace, to host your applications and/or data. Now we’re not making any value judgments around the author’s recommendation to “leave the cloud and buy your own bandwidth to the Internet –- you’ll probably save 50 percent of your monthly bandwidth charges”; however, we do know a thing or two about saving on the amount of network bandwidth that enterprises consume by deploying virtualized WAN optimization.

An interesting use case for WAN optimization virtual appliances came across the wire lately. Intergence, a global professional services provider, is using software virtual appliances to not only deliver integrated virtualized solutions to its customers, but also has deployed WAN optimization virtual appliances as part of its IT infrastructure which is delivered through a managed services provider.

WAN optimization has become part of the everyday life of the enterprise networking; however, most vendors have not embraced, or have half-heartedly embraced virtualization and cloud computing. Many WAN optimization vendors have acted with myopic self interest, doing as little as possible to bring their 20th century networking products into the 21st century.

Dan Kusnetzky, Vice President Research Operations for The 451 Group has written an interesting summary entitled “Uncorking Performance Bottlenecks”, which discusses how IT should be thinking about performance optimization. Dan points out that many business workloads today are structured as multiple services but are increasingly hosted on different physical server in a datacenter. Dan suggests that there are three phases to uncorking performance bottlenecks for IT in this scenario:

We read with great interest this article in Virtualization Journal which asks the question why aren’t we using virtualization for unified communications, specifically for voice applications? This is really a great question. After all, as Certeon points out in the article, if we were to move from the current voice delivery hardware-based solutions to a virtual software appliance voice delivery model, some of the savings could include:

Interop 2009 in New York is next week, November 16 – 20 at the Javits Convention Center. One of the things that caught our attention for Interop 2009, naturally, was the focus on virtualization. Virtualization not only has its own tracks at the event, there is even an entire day dedicated to Virtualization during the event. The virtualization track includes education tracks on: Virtualization Concepts and Practices, Virtualization Management, and Desktop Virtualization. The Virtualization Day is comprised of two half-day workshops. These workshops are entitled: Advanced Virtualization Management and Automation and Expanding Virtualization to Desktops and Applications.
