Product lifecycle management (PLM) is the process of managing the entire lifecycle of a product, from its conception through design and manufacture to service and disposal. PLM should be seen not as a single software product but as a collection of software tools (e.g., CAD, CAM/CAE) and working methods (e.g., PDM and DMPM) integrated together either to address single stages of the lifecycle, to connect different tasks, or to manage the whole process.
Much of PLM collaboration and communication require work to be done in parallel among multiple design, engineering, and manufacturing organizations. These environments are challenging enough, but when considering that many of these organizations are geographically distributed, the roadblocks to success increase dramatically.
As enterprises distribute their resources globally, collaboration and communications among remote organizations take on new levels of importance for the success of PLM infrastructures. Many enterprises use Web-based collaboration solutions, such as Microsoft SharePoint or EMC eRoom, to share critical information and applications. Though these products allow development and manufacturing organizations to facilitate collaboration and communication, persistent WAN bottlenecks can greatly reduce PLM productivity.
Unlike most WAN optimization products, Certeon's application acceleration solutions allow global enterprises to take full advantage of distributed PLM infrastructures and Web-based collaboration environments. Many of these applications provide remote access to large design files (averaging 50MB) over a WAN. Low network bandwidth, high latency, network congestion, and packet loss make sharing this information impossible for distributed teams.
Certeon recently announced a partnership with Siemens, a leader in PLM solutions, based on its outstanding results in accelerating design file access and downloads for Solid Edge CAD and Teamcenter applications over a WAN. Using Certeon's Application Acceleration Blueprint for Siemens Solid Edge and Teamcenter, customers such as Hubbell Lighting and Ideal Aerosmith reported outstanding performance results in accelerating Solid Edge CAD design files over SharePoint-based WAN infrastructures.
